In the colorful tapestry of my life, there's been a thread woven with sadness and heaviness on my chest. Though I'm usually cheerful and outgoing, these feelings would hit me now and then.
As life unfolded, exposing me to different traumas, this unwelcome companion started showing up more often and with greater intensity. I silently carried this burden until the day I chose to embark on a healing journey. Along the way, I learned valuable methods and practices for change and growth.
The Silent Struggle:
Growing older, I found myself grappling with the shadow of depression that had been with me since youth. I kept this struggle hidden, a silent burden that I bore alone. It wasn't until I began exploring different healing modalities.
The Healing Odyssey:
Fast forward to a chapter of intentional healing. From hypnotherapy sessions with my dearest friend Sarah to embarking on plant medicine journeys, I began the deliberate process of untangling the knots of my heavy-hearted friend, depression. Then I felt brave enough to confront and share my battle with my dearest friend, Sarah. It worked, to some extent. The intensity lessened, and the visits became less frequent, until...
The COVID Conundrum:
Enter the global pandemic, thrusting me into isolation for two and a half months. The uncertainty of tomorrow became a breeding ground for my old friend depression, returning stronger and more daunting than ever. In the midst of darkness, thoughts of escaping this painful existence took root.
I reached out to Sarah, who stood by me then and still does. Together, we embarked on a healing journey, a lifeline that pulled me out of the darkest depths, helping me keep going. But, the echoes of sadness, depression, and that familiar chest heaviness lingered.
The Turning Point: Himalayan Kriya Yoga:
Enter the turning point—the practice that shifted the tides of my inner world. Himalayan Kriya Yoga, guided by my teacher Samten that led me to meet, practice and learn from my incredible Guru Guruji Dr. Pradeep Ullal, not only released the grip of depression but also taught me the art of embracing transient emotions. It opened my heart anew, offering a completely different perspective on life.
Embracing the Ebb and Flow:
Through consistent practice, I learned that emotions, however overwhelming, are visitors that come and go. Kriya Yoga equipped me with the tools to face these unwelcome guests with grace and resilience. It became a sanctuary where I not only shed the weight of depression but also opened my heart anew, seeing life through a completely different lens.
9 practical strategies for brighter days:
Living with depression can be challenging, but taking small steps towards self-care and positive change can make a significant difference. Here are a few practical strategies to help lift the weight of depression and foster a sense of well-being:
1- Engage in Physical Activity:
Incorporate regular exercise into your routine, even if it's just a short walk. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
2- Connect with Supportive People:
Reach out to friends, family, or a support group. Sharing your feelings and staying connected with others can provide emotional support and alleviate feelings of isolation.
3- Set Realistic Goals:
Break down tasks into smaller, manageable goals. Celebrate small achievements, and avoid setting unrealistic expectations. Progress, no matter how small, contributes to a sense of accomplishment.
4- Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques:
Explore mindfulness practices, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. These techniques can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve overall mental well-being.
5- Nourish Your Body:
Focus on a balanced diet with nutritious foods. Avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol and processed sugars, as they can affect mood and energy levels. I personally benefited greatly when I took probiotics through food and nutritional supplements, because probiotics support healthy bacteria in the intestines, which in turn helps in the release of serotonin, the happiness hormone.
6- Limit Social Media and Screen Time:
Set boundaries on screen time, especially on social media. Comparing oneself to others online can contribute to negative self-perception. Take breaks and engage in activities that bring joy.
7- Prioritize Sleep Hygiene:
Establish a bedtime routine and create a sleep-conducive environment. Quality sleep is crucial for mental health, and prioritizing sleep hygiene can positively impact mood and energy levels.
8- Express Creativity:
Engage in activities that allow for self-expression and creativity. This could be art, writing, music, or any form of expression that brings joy and fulfillment.
9- Seek Professional Help:
Reach out to a mental health professional for guidance and support. Therapy, counseling, or medication can be valuable components of a comprehensive approach to managing depression.
An Invitation to Light:
So, here I am, extending an invitation to anyone feeling the weight of depression or the tightness in their chest: You are not alone. Reach out, ask for help, and consider the transformative embrace of Kriya Yoga. It's not about banishing emotions; it's about dancing with them, understanding them, and, ultimately, finding the light within.
My journey through the depths of depression has been a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Today, I stand not free from sadness but with a heart wide open, thanks to the wisdom of Himalayan Kriya Yoga.
Remember, recovery is a gradual process, and it's okay to seek help. Small, consistent steps can contribute to a more positive and hopeful outlook. Be patient with yourself, and prioritize self-compassion on your journey towards healing.
If you're on a similar path, know that healing is possible, and there's a community of support waiting for you. You are not alone. Let's walk this journey together. 🌈💖
